This comprehensive course explores the principles and practices of the Active Learning approach developed by Dr. Lilli Nielsen, a research-informed framework designed to engage children with complex disabilities through exploration and meaningful interaction. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the foundational concepts of Active Learning, including the Five Key Concepts, the Dynamic Learning Circle, and the Five Phases of Educational Treatment. The course emphasizes how this approach supports the development of critical early learning skills that form the foundation for communication, literacy, math, science, and other academic areas.
Learners will examine how to assess students' unique strengths, preferences, and developmental levels to design learning experiences that foster active participation and growth. Through case examples and practical application, participants will learn how to choose appropriate materials, structure environments, and implement strategies that match each learner's interests, access, and abilities. The course will also address how to integrate assessment, implementation, and reflection processes to measure the impact of Active Learning interventions effectively.
Collaboration is an important element of the Active Learning approach, and this course highlights how multidisciplinary teams—educators, therapists, and families—can work together to create cohesive, responsive learning environments. Participants will leave the course with concrete tools and strategies to immediately apply Active Learning principles in their own settings, empowering them to create more engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate opportunities for individuals with severe and multiple disabilities.
